Sonic Swells
Sonic Swells is a suite of three multimedia works exploring the interplay between natural phenomena, data, sound and vision. Each piece features a dual-screen visual element and is presented in octophonic surround sound, immersing the audience in a multidimensional sensory experience. Combining field recordings, sensor data, synthesis, graphic scores, live and sampled instruments, the suite transforms environmental rhythms and textures into rich sonic and visual landscapes.
Ocean Swells – 18 mins
(Ripple, Swell, Break)
Primarily an installation work, Ocean Swells uses ocean weather data—including wave height, wind direction, and wave period—to shape its ebbing and flowing soundscape. Audifications of ripples, a synthesizer driven by oceanic conditions, and an ensemble interpreting graphic scores inspired by wave creation intertwine to evoke the sea’s dynamic energy. Drone footage from Bells Beach, the location of the data, complements the sound with sweeping visuals of the coastline.
Riding Swells – 18 mins
(Lip, Fall, Trim, Step, Carve, Tube)
Riding Swells translates the experience of surfing into sound using sensor and tracking data captured while riding waves. All sounds are crafted from saxophone and deconstructed saxophone, creating a textured auditory landscape that mirrors the arcs and movements of surfing. Movement data triggers sounds, controls positioning and influences effects on the audio. Developed in collaboration with filmmaker Milo Inglis, the piece merges sound and visuals to celebrate the visceral connection between human motion and the ocean’s rhythms.
Glacier Swells – 7 mins
(Névé and Firn)
Glacier Swells is an immersive installation and performance that explores the profound transformation of glaciers and the realities of climate change. At its core is a bespoke conductive ice instrument that produces sound through touch, serving as both a tactile and auditory interface. This unique instrument triggers field recordings of glaciers, samples from an ensemble performing graphic scores, and sonifications derived from glacier and climate data. Developed with Playable Streets, the Cold Voice transforms physically and sonically as it melts.
The sonic experience is paired with a striking visual component, created in collaboration with photographer Christian Åslund. Historical photographs of glaciers taken a century ago are contrasted with modern recreations, vividly illustrating their dramatic retreat over time. Through this fusion of sound and imagery, Glacier Swells invites reflection on the fragility and enduring strength of nature in the face of environmental change.
